One of the best things to come out of 2020: this hot chocolate bomb trend! I have always loved hot chocolate, but this revamp on an old classic has made them so much better this season. I feel like these are the perfect treat because it’s a really fun activity with a sweet reward at the end.

I have to admit I had so much fun making these once I got the hang of it and they aren’t as hard as you would think! Here’s everything you need:

  • Silicone half circle molds

  • Chocolate chips

  • Hot chocolate mix (homemade or store bought)

  • Marshmallows

  • Optional: sprinkles

How to make hot chocolate bombs:

First you will need to melt your chocolate. I recommend using chocolate chips because they will taste better than the melting wafers. I had great success with chocolate chips and a tiny bit of coconut oil (adding a touch of oil helps to create glossy and smooth chocolate).

Melting the chocolate: Use a microwave safe bowl and add a touch of oil to the chocolate. Heat in the microwave in increments of 30 seconds, stirring in between each until all the chocolate is melted. If you stick your chocolate in the microwave for minutes at a time, you risk seizing your chocolate which will ruin it. Slow and steady!

Okay once the chocolate is melted, you can fill your molds! Depending on the size of your molds, spoon in enough chocolate to coat the semicircle while still leaving the middle open. You will want enough space to fill with powder and marshmallows. I used the back of my spoon to spread the chocolate all around the sides. Don’t worry if it’s not smooth, you won’t see this side once filled!

Next, pop the molds into the freezer and they will be hardened within 10-15 minutes. While those are setting, you can make your hot chocolate powder. Use a 1:2 cocoa powder sugar ratio, such as 1/3 cup cocoa powder to 2/3 cup sugar. Feel free to use store-bought hot chocolate mix (if using store bought, water may be better instead of milk because of the added milk powder in store bought mixes).

Before you pull the chocolate out of the freezer, get everything else ready. Set out your mini marshmallows, hot cocoa powder, a plate or baking sheet with wax paper and an extra microwave safe plate.

Stick the extra plate in the microwave for 2 minutes to get it hot. Set aside. Pull the set chocolate out of the freezer and pop them out of the molds. Take one side of the semicircle edge side down and rub it over the hot plate to melt the edges slightly. Set down and fill with hot cocoa powder and mini marshmallows. Melt the edges of another side and stick the two semicircles together, pressing gently for a couple seconds. Place the finished bombs on the wax paper lined plate. Continue until all hot chocolate bombs have been made.

To decorate: I just used more melted chocolate to drizzle over and sprinkles! Pour some chocolate chips in a ziplock bag and microwave for 30 second increments, moving around the chocolate between each interval. The chocolate will eventually melt. Snip the corner off and drizzle over the cocoa bombs, top with sprinkles.

Once the hot chocolate bombs are made and decorated, stick them in the freezer for 15-20 minutes until completely set. Store in the fridge or freezer.

I hope you guys can snuggle up on the couch with one of these soon :)

Hot Chocolate Bombs

  • 2 cups semi sweet chocolate chips (plus extra)

  • 1/2 tbsp coconut oil

  • 2/3 cup sugar

  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder

  • pinch of salt

  • mini marshmallows

  • sprinkles (optional)

  1. Add the chocolate chips and coconut oil in a microwave safe bowl. Microwave in 30 second increments, stirring in between each until the chocolate is melted. Spoon enough chocolate into silicone semicircular molds in order to coat the sides, but leave the center open. The back of a spoon works great to push the chocolate around all the sides. Once filled, freeze for 10-15 minutes until completely set.

  2. Mix together the sugar, cocoa powder and salt to make hot chocolate powder. Set aside with the mini marshmallows.

  3. Place a microwave safe plate in the microwave for approx. 2 minutes until hot. Pull the set chocolate molds out of the freezer and pop the chocolate out.

  4. Rub one chocolate semi circle, edge side down on the plate to melt the edges. Spoon in hot cocoa powder and marshmallows (the amount depends on how big your molds are, I added enough to fill one half). Melt the edges of another semi circle and press the two sides together to form one hot cocoa bomb. Continue until all hot cocoa bombs are used and keep in freezer until set (15-20 minutes). Optional: decorate with drizzled chocolate and sprinkles.

  5. Add hot chocolate bombs to 8-10 ounces of very hot milk. Store in fridge/freezer.
