Homemade Pop Tarts

Homemade Pop Tarts

Sure you can buy Pop-tarts at the store, but when a recipe is this easy it's always better homemade!Ok, so these aren't completely homemade. I took some shortcuts because that's acceptable and this recipe is really just all about making your own childhood favorite at home. I'm going to show you a few different flavors, but once you get the concept down you can have fun with the fillings and toppings!

For the crust:

Store bought pie crust! This is the key to quick homemade pop-tarts. No frozen butter or making your own dough. Just buy your favorite brand of pie crust and let it come to room temperature so that you can handle it easily.

For the fillings:

For the strawberry flavor, I bought my favorite strawberry jam. The brown sugar filling is just a mixture of brown sugar, cinnamon and a little flour. Simple.

For the icings:

Powdered sugar and a little milk. You can mix in vanilla, food coloring, cinnamon or extra strawberry jam for color.

How to make:

Depending on the brand of pie crust you bought, you may need to flour your counter to make sure it doesn't stick. If your crust doesn't feel sticky you may not need extra flour. Cut the sides of the circular pie crust to make a rectangle. Then cut the big rectangle into six even rectangles (they do not have to be perfect it will bake and come together). If you want you can roll the extra dough together to make more pop-tarts. Then just add a tablespoon or so of filling in the center of three of the rectangles, leaving the edges open. Use your finger and rub the egg wash along the edges of the top and bottom piece. Place the empty top piece on the bottom. Then with a fork, crimp the edges of the crust together.Poke holes in the tops and place on a parchment lined baking sheet. Ready for the oven!Bake for 15-17 minutes at 350 degrees.Once they have cooled, add your icing and toppings!

A fun Valentine's Day edition! Also just yummy on any day of the year. Just the strawberry version with chocolate drizzled over.I hope you enjoy making these!

Homemade Pop-tarts

  • 1 package of pie crust (room temperature)

  • 1 egg

  • 1 tbsp milk

For Icing

  • 1 cup powdered sugar

  • 2 tbsp milk

  • 1 tsp vanilla

Strawberry

  • 1 cup strawberry jam

Cinnnamon Brown Sugar

  • 1/2 cup brown sugar

  • 2 tsp cinnamon

  • 1 tbsp flour

  1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Unroll the room temperaute pie crust on a floured suface. Cut the sides of the circular pie crusts to create a large rectangle. Cut the rectangle into six even rectangles.

  2. Add approximately a tablespoon of filling in the middle of three of the rectangles. Leave the edges empty. For the strawberry flavor, use the jam. For the brown sugar cinnamon flavor, just mix together the brown sugar, cinnamon and flour to create the filling.

  3. Whisk together the egg and milk to create an egg wash. With your finger, brush the egg wash on the edges of all rectangles. Create three whole pop tarts by placing an empty rectangle on top of one with filling. Press the edges lightly together, then with a fork crimp the sides together. Poke several holes into the tops to allow for venting. Repeat with the other roll of pie crust.

  4. Place the pop tarts on parchment lined baking sheets and bake for 15-17 minutes until golden brown. Cool on a wire rack.

  5. For the icing, whisk together the powdered sugar until the powdered sugar has dissolved. Add the vanilla. Once the pop tarts are cooled, spoon the icing over the tops and add extra toppings of your choice.
